It really IS Achilles. It's tempting to view Hector as the hero, since he's a much more likable and sympathetic character, but he's the antagonist. Achilles is the epic hero par excellence--strong, brave, nearly invincible, handsome, part divine but mortal himself. His name is mentioned in the first line (and Hector's in the last), and by the end of the Iliad he has become a more thoughtful person with a more internal sense of honor--one might even call it a conscience.
The Iliad is a recounting of the trojan war. There's really no sole hero, as there are many. Achilles is usually a focus in the study of it, though there's also Hector, Ajax, Paris, Odysseus, and quite a few others. The aspect of the true hero depends on your perspective.


Odysseus, in the end, devised the trojan horse and permitted the aechians to defeat the trojans. But Paris fired the arrow that took down Achilles, who was percieved as being undefeatable. Also, it can be said that the true heroism lied witht he gods, as they are attributed for causing these spectacular feats and simply using the men as their tools.
Diomedes. He not only has the courage and fighting ability of a true hero, he is as wise as Nestor, and very respected among the leaders. He also fought against some of the gods in battle, and he even wounded them.
