He was not a rebel, as he had never sworn allegiance to Edward. Edward executed him as a rebel but even in those days they knew the difference between a rebel and an enemy. So, a true hero, though Braveheart is a load of rubbish for all (or should I say ';a'';?) that.
It depends on your point of view. He was a hero to those who supported him, to others he was a monster. An english historian in the 14th century described him as ';an outcast from pity, a robber, a sacriligeous man, an incendiary and a homicide, a man more cruel than the cruelty of Herod, and more insane than the fury of Nero...a man who burnt alive boys in schools and churches in great numbers.';
He was definitely a hero to those he rebelled with. The term hero is relative.
Why are they mutually exclusive? He was both a rebel to the English ruling monarchy and a true hero to his Scottish people.
