Who is the true hero in The Lord of the Rings?

explain.Who is the true hero in The Lord of the Rings?
Tom Bombadil because he saved frodo and the hobbits on the first step of the journey from the nazgul and could where the ring without any negative effects at all. Though I believe ';demigod'; would be a more accurate description of him possibly.Who is the true hero in The Lord of the Rings?
I don't think there is one ';true hero'; that can be singled out.

The two I personally feel were the most heroic were Frodo and Samwise. Frodo was the one who had to carry the Ring for most of the journey, and he was the one most marked by it. Samwise was a constant support to Frodo on his quest, and if he hadn't been such a steadfast companion, the Ring would never have been destroyed.

Although Gollum was ultimately the one who got the Ring into the volcano, I wouldn't classify him as a hero--just a tragic, twisted character. He never intended to save the world, and it was a pure accident that through his greed he accidentally cast both himself and the Ring into the fires of Mount Doom.

Though other characters all played a valuable role in saving Middle Earth, I would say that Frodo and Samwise come closest to being the ';true heroes.';
I have heard a lot of different opinions on the subject of who the hero of LoTR is

now some will say Aragorn, who is certainly a very central figure of the last two books at least; some will say the faithful Sam emerges as the hero; some will say the hero is Gandalf. If not for Gandalf the quest would have surely failed, how many other members of the fellowship do you think could have saved them from the Balrog. And, without Gandalf, the hobbits never would have met Aragorn and they would have died in Bree; and of course lets not forget some say it's Frodo, the character that the books (mostly) start and he also has the most important task.

Hmmmmmmm......... It all depends on what your interpretation of ';hero'; is

In terms of plot, Frodo was definitely the central character.

In terms of theme, Aragorn is the focus.

Gandalf made important contributions and certain things definitely would not have been possible without him. He sort of ';holds the story together';

When speaking of heroic deeds, it was Merry and Eowyn who slew the Witch-King

But in the end the whole story was about the ring itself. :)
After consulting with my better half, we resolved that Aragorn (sp?) was the hero. Savior of folk throughout the story, but more than that, he took his rightful place as king to lead and save his people. Taking power is no heroic thing, but it was his desire to avoid that power that pushes him out front as the hero of the story in my mind.

My first thought was Samwise, since Frodo was a sniveling lump most of the time, but Samwise was also more or less a faithful dog.
i was going to write a long rant about how the book is great and the film is not, and then talk about how all the minor characters are the heroes and thus prove my originality and failure to conform... but i decided against and here is my answer;

lord of the rings is such a great book because of it's ';bucking of convention';, it does not have one clearly defined hero who is all good and takes the weight of the world on his shoulders whilst still finding time to pop out twee one-liners and flex his muscles, it has many flawed characters, all of whom are essential to the conclusion. so i suppose i have to resolve (at risk of sounding rather twee myself) that the fellowship is the true hero, and they all have good and bad points. Good question, sorry if i rambled rather.
Sam, because even though he physically didn't carry the ring, he carried Frodo. There are so many times where Frodo would have given up and not continue on his path to help save the world if it wasn't for Sam especially when he carried Frodo to the volcano. Sam was clear and saw the bigger picture when Frodo started to get caught up in the madness.
There isn't one, which is why it's such a brilliant book. there are technically 3: Gandalf, who was some type of angel who came to middle earth with the task of removing all the bad guys, Frodo for destroying the ring and Sauron, and Aragorn for saving the free people of middle earth. All are pretty well equal in my opinion.
Sam. He never saw himself as one, but without him, Frodo would have never made it to Mt. Doom. He wasn't a likely candidate, certainly Aragorn and Gandalf were the true epic heros, but to me, Samwise Gamgee's love, loyalty and simple faith made him the true hero.
I want to say everyone who fought for the good side. (Or the fellowship) because with out their love and dedication to Frodo, he would never have gotten that far. But Samwise was the main contributor. He was there next to Frodo the entire trip!
Sam, because he is who caries the ring barer up the mountain and saves him many times through the stories. Sam is also the most courageous character because he acts fearless.
Everyone that fights evil, but the one who is there all along and does not give up no matter what is Sam. I think of him as the true hero. Without him Frodo could not have succeeded.
I'd have to say Frodo because he endures so much suffering and actually manages to discard the ring like so many others have failed to do.
Chuck Norris; he is the true hero of everything. If you disagree prepare yourself for a roundhouse kick to the face.
Sam- If he hadn't had been there for Frodo and encouraged him, the ring would have been used for evil rather than destroyed.
sam and froto as a team! froto was needed to keep the ring moving, and sam was there to keep him from going insane. they couldnt have done it without their teamwork.
Froto

He is the reason that all of the bad guys died at the end, just watch the movie
Golem.
