I have a school research project to complete, and I considered Ronald Reagan as my hero, but another student had already chosen him. Everyone who I've come up with is either not American, or too controversial. Whose your hero thats most of the following: Humble, ethical, selfless, dedicated, brave and/or courageous?Whose a true American hero who lived within the last 50 years?
Despite what a prior respondent has said about the term being misapplied to entertainment and sports figures recently, I would nominate Lou Gehrig, (he displayed many if the traits you outlined) although I think it's been more than 50 years since he died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, which has since come to be known as ';Lou Gehrig's Disease.';
Others that I would nominate as an American Hero would include Senator (and former Naval Aviator) John McCain, the New York (and other city's) Firefighters who rush into the mouth of danger to save the lives of others whom they often don't know, members of our Uniformed and Armed Services who put themselves in harm's way and fight to protect our freedom year in and year out. Also Jimmy Stewart who served during WWII (I do know that he died within the last several years, so he would fit...and I bet you nobody else thought of him, either!)Whose a true American hero who lived within the last 50 years?
Hero has become a misused word for politicians and sports entertainers.
Here is a list of real heroes.
