In what way is Samwise Gamgee the TRUE hero of Lord of the Rings? [book, not the movie]?

gotta write a paper on this topic. any ideas? thesis? intro sentence? sources? In what way is Samwise Gamgee the TRUE hero of Lord of the Rings? [book, not the movie]?
He is one of only two characters (tom aside as there are other things at play there) who willingly gave up the ring. (Bilbo being the other)

To say he was unaffected by it would be a misnomer. He was affected. The ring did tempt him. And he did give in to the temptation to put on the ring (as he didn't know it was from a power outside himself) when he was in the tunnel with frodo. But he wasn't tempted to keep it because his plain hobbit sense won out. He was the reason frodo was able to finish his quest and he was the rock that kept frodo mostly sane during the journey. In what way is Samwise Gamgee the TRUE hero of Lord of the Rings? Oh, too bad you aren't reading the books to find out the answer! The story basically begins and ends with Sam, who is a down to earth hobbit with no illusions about his life or his duties

he is sent with Frodo to take care of the Ring by destroying it, he is the only character in the book who is not affected by the ring, he even wears it for a short time but is not tempted to keep it or use it

he is the actual hero of the story, and if you ever get the chance to read the story then you will understand why

EDIT: it is hard to say how Tom Bombadil would have reacted to the ring outside of his own territory, where he was the 'master' of all living things, but I did forget about him!
Frodo could not have completed his mission without Sam.
